Biography

Zizhao Wang

Zizhao Wang, a Chinese-born bass-baritone, has been praised for his elegant tone, commanding stage presence, and remarkable vocal flexibility across a wide range of operatic and concert repertoire. A native of Qingdao(Tsingtao), China, he is a graduate of the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Bradley Williams. Wang is currently a Jane & Steven Akin Emerging Artist with Boston Lyric Opera.

In the 2025–2026 season, Wang returns to Boston Lyric Opera to perform the role of Doctor in Verdi’s Macbeth and Hortensius in Donizetti’s La fille du régiment. During the summer of 2025, he returns to the Glimmerglass Festival for a second season, singing the roles of Bum Man, Munch, and Tree in the world premiere of The House on Mango Street, while covering the Sacristan and Jailer in Puccini’s Tosca.

Wang’s 2024–2025 season highlights include his performance as Tiger and Rooster in The Big Swim, a co-production by Houston Grand Opera and Asia Society Texas. With Boston Lyric Opera, he opened the season with Concert in the Courtyard and covered the Cosmic Weatherman in Matthew Aucoin’s The Seasons. At the 2024 Glimmerglass Festival, he covered Giove in La Calisto and Uncle/Witness #9 in Elizabeth Cree.

Recent operatic credits include Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro with Knoxville Opera (2023), Martino in L’occasione fa il ladro at Opera Southwest (2023), Colline in La Bohème as a guest artist at New England Conservatory (2024), and the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly with Virginia Opera (2024).

He was awarded 2nd Place in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition New England Regional Finals and was named the Boston District Winner in 2019. That same year, he was selected to join the prestigious Apprentice Singer Program at The Santa Fe Opera.

Additional notable roles in his repertoire include Alidoro (La Cenerentola), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Simone (Gianni Schicchi), the Bass (Postcard from Morocco), Bonzo (Madama Butterfly), Elviro (Serse), La Voce (Idomeneo), and King Balthazar (Amahl and the Night Visitors).

A crowning achievement in Wang’s early career was his triumphant return to his hometown of Qingdao for the world premiere of opera Country & Home with an all-star cast at the Qingdao Opera Theater, presented as part of the 2021 Chinese National Opera Festival. His recital “Love to Hometown” at the Tsingtao Concert Hall was widely praised for its emotional resonance and cultural impact. Peninsula City News wrote,

 “This recital attracted many people in the city during the best touring season and brought classical music and opera to the public in a brilliant way.”
