Biography

Zoe Beyler

Zoe Beyler is a classical percussionist and taiko performer currently based in New York. She is seeking to explore the full breadth of percussion across time and genres through her work as an orchestral musician, contemporary chamber music performer, taiko player, drumset player, and pianist. She has performed with the Downey Symphony and American Youth Symphony, the Cracow Duo, Fear No Music, Portland Taiko, and various school and festival ensembles.

Outside of her performances, Beyler has also done work to spread music through local communities. She was a member of the Thornton Community Engagement Program, where she taught students of varying ages and abilities in the Los Angeles School District, and she has also put on educational percussion seminars for local senior centers.

Since 2015, Beyler has been a member of Portland Taiko, and for most of her time in the group has been the youngest performing member. In her work as a taiko player with Portland Taiko, she has performed at many events in support of marginalized communities and social advocacy, at exclusve ceremonies and events, in collaboration with other local performing arts groups, and in large-scale annual concerts. In her last two years as an undergraduate at USC, she was artistic director of the student run taiko group. During her time, the performer numbers almost doubled, the group increased yearly performances, she wrote and performed three new compositions, and she organized and directed two annual showcase concerts that included collaborations with other student performing arts groups and with Kinnara Taiko.

In past summers, Beyler attended the Eastern Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival, and at the latter was granted the Deanna J. Anderson Life & Legacy Percussion Fellowship, as an outstanding female percussionist. She is an alumnus of University of Southern California, where she majored in Percussion and minored in Audio Recording. Also while at USC, she was selected to travel to the Paris Coservatory for two weeks to study audio recording techniques. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters Degree at the Manhattan School of Music.
