Biography

Tristan Rais-Sherman

American conductor Tristan Rais-Sherman has been appointed Conducting Fellow of The Philadelphia Orchestra for the 2022-23 season. While in Philadelphia, Tristan will assist Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin along with other guest conductors and lead The Philadelphia Orchestra in a variety of different concert programs. Currently, Tristan is a Guest Conductor at the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition, he is the recent recipient of a 2022 Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation US. Tristan is a multi-dimensional artist exploring the intersection of technology and music. Forging the future of classical music through unconventional and innovative means, he has been building audiences on interactive platforms like Twitch. He’s blazing a new path for the future of music that is exciting, engaging, and inclusive. In previous seasons, Tristan has served as Cover Conductor with the NEC Philharmonia, St. Louis Symphony, Tulsa Opera, Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, and Syracuse Opera. He was Artistic Director of the Hilltop Music Collective in Greenwich, CT, a community and education focused ensemble. Tristan has appeared with orchestras across the United States as well as internationally – including the Aurora Festival (SWE), the Dartington Festival Orchestra (UK), St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic (RUS), Berlin Sinfonietta (DE), Chelsea Symphony (NYC), Lamont School of Music Orchestra (CO), University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra (MI), and the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra (NY). In addition to an active performance career, Tristan has an intense passion for sharing the magic of orchestral music-making with the next generation. He has served as Director of Orchestras at the Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School, as well as Conductor of the Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra String Ensemble. From 2015-2017, Tristan served as Assistant Conductor of the New York Youth Symphony. He was also conductor of the Harmony Program Youth Orchestra, leading the group in high-profile performances alongside Joyce DiDonato and as a part of Gustavo Dudamel's 2018 Residency at Princeton University. Tristan has worked with esteemed mentors such as Hugh Wolff, David Zinman, Kenneth Kiesler, Sian Edwards, Neil Varon, Johannes Gustavsson, Alexander Polishchuk, and Jeffrey Meyer. Tristan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance from Ithaca College, a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Michigan, and an Artist Diploma from New England Conservatory.
