Biography

Samantha Fox

Samantha Fox (she/her) is a stage director, theatre-maker, and mezzo-soprano. While specializing in opera and other works involving classical voice, Fox grew up immersed in a vibrant culture of folk music in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC.

Her upbringing has translated into a deep appreciation for an expansive range of musical and artistic styles which has lead to a passion for celebrating the nuance and multifaceted nature of artistic identity, both in her own practice and that of her collaborators. A versatile and multidisciplinary practitioner, Fox holds experience in devising, script-writing, movement direction, puppetry, multimedia work, prop-making, set realization, and dramaturgy, and has a zeal for taking on projects both noncanonical and personally unfamiliar.

As a stage director and theatre-maker, Fox takes interest in creating immersive theatrical worlds and experimenting with the mechanics of multimedia performance in both operatic and non-musical settings, and strives to bring deep emotional integrity and a renewed sense of humanity to her work. She is excited by distinct creative palettes, the telling of new and uncommon stories, and work that disrupts the traditional performer-audience relationship to forge new depths of connectivity and to create novel ways of experiencing art. She has collaborated on projects across the United States and internationally in England, France, Hungary, and Mexico, and seeks to continue traveling anywhere her future projects take her.

Her approach to directing and devising is fundamentally collaborative, seeking to listen to the ideas and lived experiences of those both internal and external to the creative process to inform her directorial vision, establish the reason for each work's creation, and discover a shared personal significance amongst the creative team and performers of each work. Within this, she believes that continuing to answer "Why are we making this work? Here, and now?" is imperative throughout all stages of the creative process.
