Sophie Ross is a versatile clarinetist, arts administrator, and music educator based in Washington, D.C. Sophie is currently the Associate Principal Clarinet of the Great Falls Philharmonic in Great Falls, Virginia. The ensemble strives to perform the classical canon with interpretations that closely align with the composers' original visions, while also highlighting new compositions by underrepresented voices. In 2024, Sophie joined the classical-hip-hop fusion group Classically Dope, performing with US Cultural Ambassador Konshens the MC at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage in Washington, D.C.
Sophie has primarily studied clarinet in College Park, Maryland, and Copenhagen, Denmark. At the University of Maryland, Sophie earned a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance, concentrating on chamber works for clarinet and strings. Sophie performed as the Principal Clarinet of the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, and the Maryland Opera Studio. Sophie has further studied orchestral performance at the Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, Maine in 2022 and 2024, performing on Bb and Eb clarinet. Past teachers include Jesper Helmuth-Madsen of the Copenhagen Philharmonic, David Drosinos, and Sara Reese. Sophie’s primary teacher is Robert DiLutis.
