The Oratorio Society of New York is New York City’s second oldest cultural institution, its rich history exceeded in duration only by the New York Society Library. Founded in 1873 by conductor Leopold Damrosch, the OSNY would first perform Handel’s “Messiah” on Christmas Day later that same year… the start of an unbroken tradition of annual performances. Notably, Carnegie Hall, the nation’s most prestigious concert hall, was actually built for the original purpose of providing a performing home for the OSNY.
