Biography

Julia Noulin-Mèrat

Julia Noulin-Mératis a French, American, and Canadian opera producer and international production designer. Julia is the General Director & CEO of Opera Columbus. For eight years she was the Associate Producer at Boston Lyric Opera, is the creative director for Honk Kong-based More than Musical and is the co-Artistic Director of Guerilla Opera having begun her tenure as their Producer and Head of Production. In addition, Julia has worked on over 400 opera, theater, and television productions, including 25 new operas and 22 new plays, and is the principal designer at Noulin-Mérat Studio. Other projects include a TEDx talk on site-specific opera productions in the modern age; Neverland (with China Broadway): a $20 million, 50,000 square immersive theater piece in Beijing based on Peter Pan, which required collaboration with 650 people; an immersive Pagliacci experience on fairgrounds with a circus tent with Boston Lyric Opera and Playground (Opera Omaha) a touring operatic sound sculpture in collaboration with Pulitzer composer Ellen Reid. She has served on the panel for OPERA America adjudicating the Tobin Director-Designer showcase and has received OA’s Women Opera Network - General Director mentorship distinction and recently their Leadership Intensive recognition.​ ​ Much of her work involves site-specific installations, including work at Boston Lyric Opera. Noulin-Mérat is an advocate for new works and new audience development and has produced programs for social media engagement (such as final dress rehearsal tweet seats and live streaming of performances), tactile performances for the visually impaired audiences, historically informed performances with period instruments and community-specific performances. She has commissioned new operas from the likes of Lansing McLoskey, Hannah Lash, Emily Koh, Anthony Green, Victoria Cheah, Andy Vores, Adam Roberts, Ken Ueno and many more. With over 18 years of experience in the performing arts industry, she is an adjunct professor at Pace University and a graduate of Boston University with an MBAA in Arts Administration, an MFA in Set Design, a Diversity Inclusion certificate from ESSEC Business School, a social media marketing specialization from Northwestern University, a Fundraising Development Specialization from UC Davis, a Finance & Leadership certification from Harvard Business School. Ms Noulin-Mérat has a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal, in Design for the Theatre. In addition to her degrees, Julia has studied at Central Saint Martins in London and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
