Esteban Muñoz studied performance, musicology, and art history at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and has completed a master’s degree in Dramaturgy at the Bavarian Theater Academy. He began his artistic career as a stage manager at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, where he later acted as assistant director and production manager. He has worked as an assistant to many directors including Calixto Bieito, Barrie Kosky, Michael Hampe, Emilio Sagi, Keith Warner, Balázs Kovalik and Hugo de Ana in productions of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile, Teatro del Lago (Chile), Opéra de Lausanne, Houston Grand Opera, Munich Biennale, the Prinzregentheater in Munich and numerous open-air opera productions. He has also worked very closely with La Fura dels Baus and Carlus Padrissa since 2011. He has frequently been invited to the Bayerische Staatsoper, where he works principally as an assistant director. In 2013, Esteban was awarded the ProArte Prize for Young Artist of the Year in Chile. His most recent engagements include the productions of Krenek’s Karl V. with Carlus Padrissa at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers at the Salzburger Festspiele. Since 2016 he works as Staff Director at the Komische Oper Berlin.
