Biography

Zane Alcorn

Zane Auburn Alcorn (He / Him / His) is a stage director of theatre, musicals, and opera. His work has spanned from absurdist new works to dramatic classics and everything in between, most recently directing Twelfth Night at Theater At Monmouth. As a director, Zane has developed a style of collaboration that is grounded in well-informed dramaturgical discussions, while embracing active staging that regularly engages the surrounding environment as its own character.

Over the last ten years, Zane has worked across the country as a stage director and assistant director, focusing on productions with deep possibilities for empathetic growth and stories that connect with large audiences without losing the unique interpretations and ideas that should be engaged with every new staging. As a creative leader, Zane seeks to empower the collaborators around him to create a more powerful artistic community.

Zane received his B.A. in Theatre Arts from San Diego State University. In addition to directing, Zane has over ten years of experience as a Stage Manager, Dramaturg, and Producer.

Stage Director - Orpheus In The Underworld (Offenbach)

As Stage Director, I am responsible for supervising and coordinating multiple creative departments not only including staging responsibilities, but also crafting an "in-the-round" stage layout to fit the needs of a non-traditional performance venue, creating scenic, costume, and lighting design concepts, writing new English scene dialogue, and creating marketing material.

During my time as Production Stage Manager, the production process required several daily updates to all departments as creative concepts, performer needs, and artists schedules. I supervised a team of of 4 ASMs comprising of 2 students and 1 professional throughout the rehearsal process and performances. My responsibilities included email coordination between departments, creating and distributing rehearsal/performance reports, calling runthroughs and performances, collaborating with the Staging Staff on paperwork and other needs, as well as mentoring and supervising the Assistant AD and ASM teams.

Production Stage Manager (Guest Artist) - The Grand Hotel Tartarus (Danielpour)

During my time as Production Stage Manager, I supervised a team of of 4 ASMs comprising of 2 students and 2 professionals throughout the rehearsal process and performances. Director - Twelfth Night (Shakespeare)

2025 - 2025
As a Director for a summer repertory production, I was tasked with staging a 90-minute cut of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night within 3 days with a cast of 8 performers doubling roles to fill the entire narrative scope of the play. Within the production we included songs, comedic sword fights, and constant complication character changes to make present an emotionally deep and entertaining production.

As Stage Directing Intern, I participated in the day-to-day needs of Stage Director Caroline Clegg and Assistant Stage Director Audrey Chait throughout the rehearsal process including note-taking, coordinating chorus members during staging, creating detailed paperwork and supporting cover staging rehearsals. Throughout the process I crafted dramaturgy articles, compiled research photography, creating a scene summary breakdown, and printed out maps for reference for performers during rehearsals. Additionally, I was responsible for staging Cincinnati Opera's Opera Chorus Cabaret 2024 which included songs from musicals and operas ranging in presentation from concert-style to staging with limited scenic and costumes.

As Assistant Director, I supported the stage director and choreographer by offering artistic ideas, taking detailed staging notes, and relaying runthrough notes to the cast. Once the production had opened, I was responsible for staging the covers in between performances, stage directing the studio artists in songs from "Face On The Barroom Floor" and "Street Scene" for CCO's SHORT WORKS scenes program, as well as delivering a dramaturgical deep dive to audiences through "Opera Notes" which took place before each performance. During performances I would also take detailed notes and discuss them with performers before each performance to maintain the integrity of the production.
