Pay rate starts at $30-35/hr. (based on experience) and is overtime eligible. Position is paid biweekly as W2 employment. Housing is available for select candidates

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: Position is seasonal; 35+ hours per week; from May through the end of August. Shop hiring begins in January and some minimal part time hours will be required for seasonal staff review and design review starting in February/March. Start and end dates can be flexible dependent on show requirements. Eligible candidates may start working 35+ hours per week as early as February / March 2024.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Technical Director is responsible for the planning, purchasing, and execution of all technical and scenic elements. They will ensure that seasonal personnel are managed effectively and efficiently in safe environments both at the scene shop and at the Barns. The Technical Director will work with the Director of Production to create and update production schedules and calendars as needed to ensure timely delivery of all scenic and technical elements for Opera productions. Evenings and weekends during tech will be required.

Duties And Responsibilities

Lead crews building 2 full opera productions as well as supervise / advise other events
Lead the mentorship of all Technical Theater Apprentices
Supervise scene shop staff and ensure safe operation of tools and processes
Supervise and maintain the scene shop and the Barns’ stage ensuring the spaces are clean, safe, and appropriately staffed and managed.
Plan and execute load in and strike of each production, and restoring the Barns at the end of the season.

Requirements

Must have working knowledge of Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD
Strong knowledge of theatrical construction techniques
Experience in or knowledge of budgeting, production management, and production
Proven leadership and project management ability in the performing arts
Sensitivity and commitment to the mission of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts
A minimum of 5 years working in a professional or educational shop environment
BA/BFA in Theater or equivalent experience preferred

Physical Demands

Lift/move up to 50 pounds
Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, bend and reach with arms up to 50 percent of the time.
Frequently operates a computer and other office equipment (i.e. calculator, copier, printer, etc.)
