Trombone and Related Duties
The North Dakota State University Challey School of Music seeks an outstanding trombone faculty member. The position is offered as a 9-month, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor, beginning in August of 2025 at a salary of $52,000.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate applied lessons and related courses and ensembles in low brass, recruit and develop of an outstanding undergraduate and graduate trombone studio, perform related duties according to their specialty areas and the needs of the Challey School of Music, and contribute to our collegial and mutually-supportive environment. Ancillary contributions are expected and will include opportunities described below in qualifications. Versatility and demonstrated excellence in these related areas will enhance candidates’ applications.
The Challey School of Music has a long tradition of training musicians in music education, performance, conducting, composition, and liberal studies at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. We specialize in the education of K-12 music teachers as well as, with our master’s and doctoral degrees, the training of college and university faculty members. The Instrumental area has specialists in all typical instruments—full time faculty members as well as part-time adjunct faculty. Instrumental ensembles include the NDSU Wind Symphony, the University Band, the University Symphony Orchestra, two full Jazz Ensembles, jazz combos, the Gold Star Marching Band, pep bands, and chamber music ensembles. The NDSU Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble tour annually.
Minimum Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in trombone performance or music education with an applied trombone focus. Candidates with an ABD degree status may be considered for a lecturer appointment with expectation of completion within the 2025-26 academic year for continuation.
Demonstrated excellence and achievement in trombone performance and teaching
Demonstrated success or potential as an engaging, collegial, productive, and effective faculty member
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful experience in teaching in higher education and/or K-12 education
Successful experience in student recruitment and mentoring, including graduate students
Successful experience in conducting or assisting with marching and athletics bands
Additional specialty areas which may include jazz studies, music education, ensemble direction or coaching, academic/musicianship studies, music technology and/or digital/distance pedagogy
Demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity
