Description

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic seeks a Music Director (MD) who:

1. Demonstrates artistic excellence as a musician and conductor.
As the artistic leader, the MD will possess a highly formed artistic sensibility, the leadership to articulate and deliver on an artistic vision that serves our community, and the conducting skills to bring out the best in the musicians. The MD is an advocate for high artistic standards, while being attentive to relevant programs and using the repertoire to tell a meaningful story or relate to the listener in meaningful ways. The MD will use personal relationships and respect for colleagues to foster trust, stimulate individual artistry, and handle interpersonal matters with aplomb.

2. Has the administrative skills required of an artistic leader.
The MD is a key member of the senior staff leadership. In that capacity, the Music Director will commit to working creatively and collaboratively with the CEO, staff, and the Board of Directors in planning and execution of artistic programs. The MD will participate positively in strategy and budgeting, audience development, conflict resolution, donor fundraising, and program oversight. The MD will advocate for artistic priorities while staying responsive to budgetary realities. Through word and deed, the MD seeks to represent the organization in the most beneficial light.

3. Communicates the orchestra’s mission and vital community presence to patrons, donors, and the community at large.
As a principal spokesperson and advocate, the MD maintains a visible presence and makes use of personal charisma to connect the Philharmonic with community members. This occurs in speaking engagements and public appearances where the MD will translate music into personal experience to communicate the inspiring relevance of the Philharmonic. They maintain relationships with other artists and remain open to developing beneficial collaborative programs.
