Description

The Assistant Dean for Full-Time Faculty Affairs oversees the thoughtful implementation of policies and processes related to full-time faculty. A key member of the senior leadership team at Parsons, the Assistant Dean works alongside the Executive Dean and Deans’ Council, and is charged with developing strategic, multi-year approaches in the oversight of full-time faculty affairs. The Assistant Dean plays a critical role in anticipating or elevating pressing issues pertaining to processes, policies, or individual personnel concerns and working toward their resolution in partnership with the Provost’s Office and Human Resources. Further, the Assistant Dean -- in partnership with the Associate Dean for Faculty -- provides empathy and clarity in working closely with faculty at various points in their careers from recruitment through retirement.

Working with multiple university-based partners, the Assistant Dean represents Parsons on College and University committees and provides Parsons-based leadership on the oversight and management of administrative processes related to:

reappointment, tenure, and rank promotion reviews for full-time faculty at Parsons;

searches/hiring of new full-time faculty including US work authorization if international;

faculty contracts, MOUs, and employment-related letters and actions related to faculty compensation and benefits;

sabbaticals and other academic leaves.

This position reports to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Planning, works closely with the Vice Dean for Academic Operations and Planning, five School Deans, and the Associate Dean for Faculty, a faculty counterpart who serves in that capacity. Faculty Affairs is also supported by a Manager.

Responsibilities

In concert with the University's mission and directives in regard to full-time faculty matters, the Assistant Dean:

Liaises and collaborates with the Provost Office and other colleges of the New School on the development, planning, implementation, and refinement of policies, calendars and processes for promotions, hiring, including the full-time faculty handbook;

Oversees and implements processes for faculty reappointment, tenure, and rank promotion reviews, working with the faculty, review committees, the Associate Dean of Faculty, Parsons Executive Dean, and the University Provost’s Office; directs the processes for annual performance reviews;

Advises and supports the Executive Dean and liaises with the Provost Office, General Counsel and Human Resources in matters of full-time faculty grievances, employment terminations, and disciplinary actions;

Drafts and ensures compliance with executed full-time faculty contracts; liaises one-on-one with faculty related to contract issues;

Drafts official communications between Parsons, the Provost’s Office, Human Resources, and the General Counsel's Office; with governance bodies within Parsons; and to individual faculty.

Initiates planning and approval process for full-time faculty leaves;

Ensures compliance with existing policies for full-time faculty in accordance with the university full-time faculty handbook and directives;

Collaborates with the Parsons Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Coordinator on the recruitment of diverse and under-represented candidates for faculty positions, and the hiring and retention of new full-time faculty;

Other duties as necessary to support the goals and priorities of the Parsons Deans’ Office.

The appropriate candidates will have (Minimum Requirements):

A bachelor's or advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred, along with five years’ experience in project management, higher education administration, or related.

Culturally sensitive and educated to effectively interact with a wide range of people with a positive and inclusive mindset.

Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project-management skills; interest in refining existing processes to improve efficiency.

Experience with strategic leadership, or demonstrated capacity to take on such a leadership role;

Excellent writing and organizational skills.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Ability to assess the relative importance and sensitivity of issues and manage the issue appropriately, especially with regard to confidentiality.

Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy

Preferred Qualifications:

Direct experience working with faculty in an educational institution or as a full-time faculty member who has been through a promotion process.

Legal and/or human resources background.

Work Mode:

Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (ex 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely.

Salary Range:

$100 - 108K annual
