JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: The Assistant Librarian and Media Archivist is responsible for supporting the workload of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Library including preparation of music (scanning, part marking, editing, proofreading, etc.), organizing the collection of orchestral parts and scores, building/taking apart folders for MSO programs, and packing/unpacking music. The Assistant Librarian and Media Archivist will often serve as on-site librarian for rehearsals and concerts. In addition, score preparation and score reading for broadcasts is required as well as serving as point person for initiating and tracking media rights for the MSO’s media presence. The Assistant Librarian and Media Archivist reports to the Principal Librarian.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support a smooth and timely system to receive bowing updates from string principals for all programs.
Alongside Principal Librarian, execute music preparation duties to the highest professional standards.
Repair and rebind music as needed.
Scan music for Musicians’ Portal.
Organize music including numbering, stamping, binding and taping in preparation for performances.
Assist in maintaining the Library collection including cataloguing.
Assist in unpacking, packing and shipping music to publishers.
Serve as on-site librarian for MSO rehearsals or concerts as needed. (Managing folders, setting out conductor’s scores, etc.)
If Principal Librarian is unavailable, perform basic library administrative tasks such as updating ArtsVision entries and renting/purchasing music.
Prepare scores and serve as score reader, supporting director and camera operators, for any A/V broadcasts or captures.
Initiate and manage media licensing agreements with publishers.
Create and manage a system to track expiring media and artist licenses including releases on Naxos, YouTube, WFMT and any other future channels.
Create and manage a system to track WFMT radio broadcast series repertoire.
Catalogue and manage physical audio archive.
Other duties as assigned.

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: This position will primarily come in contact with the Principal Librarian. There will be extensive contact with orchestra musicians, operations staff and conductors.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: The position requires 3 years of successful experience working in a professional ensemble library. The ability to read and comprehend most markings in orchestral scores and parts is essential. Neat handwriting and attention to detail are also required. Computer music engraving skills are required. ArtsVision experience is also preferred. Experience with media agreements and broadcasts is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of commonly used musical foreign language terms is required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: This position requires basic math skills.
