The Social Media Manager is a creative, driven, and passionate individual who is responsible for the daily management and content creation for the Metropolitan Opera’s organic social media channels.
This person is a skilled writer and producer, both highly creative and practical, who is able to tell a compelling story while also organizing the many moving parts of each project.
Must be detail-oriented and able to shift focus quickly to keep up with the fast-paced environment of a large-scale live event-based arts institution. This role works closely with the Editorial, Video, and Graphics teams to produce social content, and is under the supervision of the Associate Director, Digital Marketing.
This position will manage all social media marketing, collaborating with staff from across the organization to address key sales and business needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Daily management of the Met’s social media channels to support the overall marketing strategy and sales needs. This includes writing post copy, capturing and editing content (including video) when needed, and the scheduling and monitoring of daily social media postings across all channels.
Identify, pitch, and develop opportunities to create and capture unique and engaging content that is in line with the Met’s tone and brand identity.
Produce and project-manage content creation from end to end, including liaising with internal teams to coordinate content captures and manage any editing or additional asset creation needed. Deliver final products that are ready to publish.
Work closely with artists as well as various internal and external stakeholders to capture and create engaging content. Must be able to work productively with different personality types and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Craft compelling social media copy that is engaging, unfailingly accurate, appropriate for the platform, and demonstrates familiarity and expertise around operatic subjects.
Maintain the Met’s ongoing social media calendar, working to incorporate content to support sales needs while driving engagement and audience growth. Serve as a resource and gatekeeper to other departments seeking to add content to the social schedule.
Serve as the coordinator and on-site manager for social media opportunities, including artist collaborations, behind the scenes content captures, Fridays Under 40 events, Holiday Open House, various offsite outreach events, etc. Edit and post content in real time as needed.
Proactively identify opportunities for collaboration to insert the Met into relevant social conversations.
Community engagement and monitoring: foster engagement by responding to comments when necessary, reposting/sharing fan and artist content, directing feedback to appropriate internal teams, and reporting content that is against community guidelines.
Report and monitor social performance by channel, content type, and key KPIs. Provide weekly detailed reports to internal team and create recommendations for optimizations based on data. Create ad-hoc reports for senior team as requested.
Research and present developing content/social platforms and new features as they become available.
Assist in the development of social media marketing strategies to grow audiences and meet revenue goals, including assisting with partnership promotional opportunities.
Assist with development and project management of paid social campaigns as needed.
Support other members of the marketing and media teams as necessary.
Skills & Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years professional experience in social media marketing or content development, preferably within a large organization
Proven track record of creating highly engaging social media content from start to finish.
Proficiency with major social media platforms and social media management tools.
Strong knowledge of opera, passion for the arts, and commitment to becoming familiar with the Met repertory of productions is required
Excellent copywriting and editing skills. Able to deliver important information accurately within the Met’s style, but with personality and a social-first tone.
Supremely detail oriented and able to prioritize and be flexible in high-pressure environment
Creative mind, able to think outside of the box while still working within organizational structure
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Strong project management, organizational, and time management skills
Proficiency with video and photo editing tools
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent
Physical Demands:
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and be flexible in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
Must work well as a part of a large team, collaborating across departments, and also individually
Requires frequent out of hours and weekend work to manage social media content captures, schedule changes, etc.
Must be willing and eager to attend performances frequently and become immersed in the artistic product of the opera house.
$75,000 - $80,000 a year
