Description

The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University seeks a passionate educator and an extraordinary musician to be appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor of Music Theory beginning July 1, 2024. Peabody’s Music Theory Department complements the teaching of our applied faculty, giving our students a deeper understanding of music through the exploration of compositional styles and techniques.

Job responsibilities include:

- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, ranging from part-writing/harmony through advanced analytical methods
- Serving on departmental, school, and university committees
- Participating in departmental reviews and curriculum development
- Advising DMA students in preparation for comprehensive exams
- Maintaining an active profile of scholarship, composition, and/or performance

Peabody’s Music Theory Department complements the teaching of our applied faculty, giving our students a deeper understanding of music through the exploration of compositional styles and techniques. The faculty in the Department of Music Theory is comprised of scholars, composers, and performers. Previous Music Theory faculty include: Danish composer Asger Hamerik, first director of the Conservatory (1871); Otto Ortmann, a pioneer in the psychology of music and director of Peabody; renowned pedagogue and composer Nadia Boulanger (1942-43); and composers Elliott Carter (1946-47) and Henry Cowell (1951-56). The Department offers a master’s degree in Music Theory Pedagogy, as well as an undergraduate minor in Music Theory. Mentorship opportunities are available to members of the Department. The Music Theory faculty is supported by 13 full-time graduate assistants.
