About

We are one of the most important art education institutions in Mexico. The student body of more than 1,000 students, attended by 140 teachers, has shown its excellence in academic performance. Our graduates perform professionally in Mexico and abroad as performing musicians, singers, dancers, choreographers and educators. On September 19, 1977, the Superior School of Music and Dance of Monterrey was founded, thanks to the sum of the wills of FONAPAS, the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, the State Government and private initiative. The Superior is part of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, being the only educational institution of its kind, established outside of Mexico City and offering music and dance degrees in the same building. Since its inauguration in 1977, it occupies the magnificent building located at the foot of Cerro del Obispado. The building was designed by the architect Pedro Gorozpe, beginning construction in 1911, to be the headquarters of the College of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and finishing its construction in 1913. This religious College operated in this building from 1913 to 1964. The Superior School of Music and Dance of Monterrey (ESMDM) is proud to belong institutionally to the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL). Its graduates and students have shared their talent with audiences around the world, in addition to contributing to the cultural development of various regions in a history of effort, discipline, vocation, mystique and dedication. La Superior is the only institution of higher education in Mexico that trains professionals in both music and dance.
