About

The HMDK Stuttgart was founded in 1857, making it the oldest and, with almost 850 students, also the largest university for music and performing arts in Baden-Württemberg. As part of the Stuttgart culture mile, it is not only of great importance as a university, but also as a concert organizer and cultural center for Stuttgart and the region. In the field of music, the study is wide-ranging; In addition to piano, organ and singing, all orchestral instruments, composition, music theory, conducting (orchestra and choir), recorder, harpsichord, guitar, elementary music education and jazz & pop are taught as main subjects. Academic and music-related subjects complement the practical music courses. All subjects can be studied in artistic or music-pedagogical specializations, and there is also a choice of courses in high school teaching with music (Bachelor's and Master's) and church music (Bachelor's and Master's). The Orchestra Academy with the SWR (soon also with the Staatstheater, in preparation) and the SWR Vocal Ensemble Academy represent a significant addition to the course.
