About

I have a B.A. in music from Yale University (1986) and a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine (1994). I taught school music for ten years in Waterville and Skowhegan and have been teaching private lessons and small groups for 20 years. I teach a mix of the Suzuki and my own methods, including Suzuki repertoire and Shirley Givens's "Adventures in Violinland," which calls for students to sing a tune, using do, re, mi (solfege) before playing it. I teach beginning students to play by ear, until they are comfortable with the physical aspects of violin-playing, when I begin teaching music reading. I teach fundamental technique, which may be applied to classical playing, fiddle tunes, or other styles. I like to present two concerts a year, when students perform alone or in small or large groups for friends and family and enjoy good food afterwards! One of the things I like best about teaching private lessons and in small groups is learning how different people, of almost all ages (five and up), think and learn and apply their learning and spirit to making music.
