The Alberto Hurtado University is a public, non-profit institution that offers the country an educational project based on the 486-year-old Jesuit tradition and legacy. Founded on October 20, 1997 by the Society of Jesus, it is part of a network of 200 Jesuit higher education institutions, present in 65 countries around the world. The university joins the tradition of training professionals of integrity, under academic rigor and creative spirit. It owes its name to the Chilean saint, the Jesuit priest, lawyer and doctor of education, Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga, with the purpose of perpetuating his spirit in academic and university work.
The Alberto Hurtado University has its foundations in the trajectory of the Latin American Institute of Social Studies (ILADES), which since 1965 was a center for reflection and high-level postgraduate education in Latin America and the intellectual and critical spirit of the Center for Research and Development of Education (CIDE), with more than 50 years contributing to the public policies of the country; in addition to the investigation of the Bellarmino Center.
In its founding charter, the University declares “to use, in the field of higher education and research, the principles of Ignatian pedagogy that with an open and critical spirit makes faith and culture dialogue; it promotes justice, it forms free people who, inspired by the Gospel of Jesus and solidly instructed in the sciences, put themselves at the service of God and men”.
The objective of the university, transversal to its professors, authorities and students, is to transform Chilean society with professionals of excellence. For this, it offers a human and comprehensive training, with academic programs that, together with its general training, flexible curricula and with a practical approach, provide minors as a second certification and complementary training.
The Alberto Hurtado University was born with the main purpose of building an academic space of excellence, non-profit, open, diverse, tolerant and inclusive. In its vocation and commitment to public service, the university decided to join the free Higher Education system since 2016, with the aim of contributing to an inclusive educational policy that has always been part of its mission.
