Hello, my name is Vivian Chang and I am a Taiwanese musician residing in Lubbock, Texas. I am the adjunct instructor of horn at Eastern New Mexico University. I am pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Texas Tech University while serving as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor teaching applied horn lessons. As a section horn player, I also perform with the Lubbock Symphony and the #TexarkanaSymphony
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Yu-hsuan (Vivian) started playing piano at the age of five and joined the school band playing the horn at nine. She was a music program student at Chongqing Junior High School and Wuling Senior High School. Vivian later attended the University of Taipei (UT) for her bachelor’s degree in music, where she received Ministry of Education Scholarships for Excellent Teacher Education and graduated as class valedictorian with the Mayor’s Award. She was also selected as an exchange student from the UT Department of Music for the 2014-15 academic year, studying at the University of Central Arkansas. Vivian is currently pursuing her DMA degree at Texas Tech University as a Helen DeVitt Jones Graduate Fellowship recipient and serving as a graduate teaching assistant in music theory and instructor of record, teaching applied horn lessons. She received her Master of Music degree from Wichita State University and attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music as part of her graduate studies. While studying at WSU, she also held the second horn position of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Vivian has primarily studied with Christopher M. Smith, Dr. Jeb Wallace, Randy Gardner, Dr. Brent Shires, Ya-wen Lien, and Yi-chun Kathy Wang. Her summer festival experiences include Aspen Music Festival and School, Atlantic Music Festival, and Miami Classical Music Festival.
Vivian has placed in several competitions, including two university concerto competitions where she performed as a soloist with the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra and Conway Symphony Orchestra. She has given eight solo recitals and appeared as an orchestral musician with many professional orchestras and ensembles, including the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and Texarkana Symphony Orchestra. Vivian was also the founding member of Haven Brass and Shocker Brass, actively involved in chamber music performances.
In addition to performing, Vivian is also an active teacher who is passionate about the pedagogy of horn and theory. She currently serves lecturer of horn at Eastern New Mexico University.
