Baritone Aaron Keeney returns Minnesota Opera this season, where he will be singing Ophémon in The Anonymous Lover and Escamillo in Carmen. Last season, he performed the role of Sid in Minnesota Opera’s filmed production of Albert Herring. Over the summer, he was a young artist at The Glimmerglass Festival, where he performed one of the notaries in Songbird, and was featured on the Wagner concert: Gods and Mortals. Aaron is a recent graduate of Juilliard, where he studied with Dr. Robert White Jr. During his studies, he covered Leporello in Don Giovanni and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. With the Juilliard Lab Orchestra, he performed selections of Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. He was also an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera in the summer of 2019, where he sang the role of the Sergeant in La bohème. On the concert stage, Aaron has been heard with Apollo’s Fire on their Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain concert series in 2018. He has also been a soloist in such classic works as Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Messiah, and Mozart’s Requiem. He received an encouragement award from the Gerda Lissner Foundation for song repertoire in 2019, and he is a recipient of the Nelson Eddy Scholarship. Some of his favorite past roles include Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, and both Count Almaviva and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro. When not singing, Aaron tutors physical science and mathematics. He enjoys backgammon, bridge, and chess, as well has hanging out with his dog, Marie.
