Rosalie Avery is a freelance bassoonist performing in the greater Milwaukee area and New York City. Currently, she is pursuing a professional studies certificate at the Aaron Copland School of Music studying with Frank Morelli. She holds a master’s in music performance and a bachelor of arts from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM). At UWM, Rosalie studied under Rudi Heinrich and Beth Giacobassi.
As an orchestral musician, Rosalie has worked with many prominent orchestras in Wisconsin, including the Wisconsin Philharmonic, Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, Racine Symphony Orchestra, and the Milwaukee Philharmonic. In the past, she has also performed with the Waukesha Area Chamber Orchestra and Symphony in the Valley. Additionally, she has worked under prominent conductors David Bloom, Ken David-Masur, and Jun Kim with the UWM Symphony Orchestra.
As an emerging chamber musician, Rosalie is a member of The Black Cat Ensemble (BCE). BCE is a mixed instrument ensemble that is dedicated to breaking barriers in the classical music sphere. Most recently, the ensemble collaborated with Danceworks Milwaukee. Rosalie also was a co-founder of the Cosmo Reed Quintet. The ensemble focused on performing works by living composers and highlighting underrepresented composers. A notable performance by the group was Jenni Brandon’s “Wildflower Quintet” at the International Double Reed Society Conference. The ensemble also presented a recital in collaboration with the UWM composition department and premiered five new works by student composers.
Rosalie’s summer festival appearances include the Madeline Island Chamber festival and LSU’s Collaborative Piano Institute Bassoon Intensive. At these summer festivals she has studied with prominent bassoonist’s Darrel Hale, Nanci Belmont, and Timothy McGovern.

Her most recent positions were as the multiple woodwind instructor for Milwaukee Public Schools and the bassoon instructor for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she was a graduate teaching assistant at UWM where she taught bassoon methods and undergraduate lessons. In the past, Rosalie served as an Americorps Artistyear Teaching fellow in the Roaring Fork Valley. There she worked at Carbondale Middle School and Roaring Fork High School with their band programs. Additionally, she taught beginning strings with AMFS’s after-school program. Rosalie also has volunteered in her community by coaching small groups at local high schools and youth programs including Nathan Hale High School, Girls Rock MKE, and UWAY (UWM Youth Wind Ensemble).
