Joanna Kim, Korean-American lyric coloratura soprano, is praised for her “crystal-clear” voice (Stage Scene LA) and compelling stage presence. She recently won 1st place in the 2025 Gwendolyn Roberts Young Artist Auditions (NATS-LA), and will perform in a sponsored showcase recital this fall. This season, she appeared as Sophie in Master Class at Sierra Madre Playhouse, directed by Tim Dang, and participated in the Verdi Marathon in Busseto, Italy, hosted by Mirko Matarazzo. She is a member of Adoro Ensemble, a Los Angeles-based vocal chamber group led by Dr. Joung-A.
In summer 2025, Joanna returns to Italy to sing Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Regium Lepidi Opera Company and joins the chorus of Pacific Opera Project’s H.M.S. Pinafore. As a 2024 Resident Artist at Opera North, she performed Diana (Orphée aux enfers), Cinderella (Into the Woods), and covered Gilda (Rigoletto). Other roles include the Son (The Juniper Tree), Norina (Don Pasquale), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), and a concert performance of Star Singer at USC in partnership with Beth Morrison Projects.
A graduate of the New England Conservatory, she performed Amore (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Amahl (Amahl and the Night Visitors), and soprano solos in Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer. Joanna was a finalist in the Opera Guild Vocal Competition, the Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition, and the Classical Singer Competition (Young Artist Division).
She can also be heard on the official soundtrack of the award-winning video game Lies of P, and in Korea’s viral YouTube variety show UMAGAME. Joanna holds degrees from USC (MM) and NEC (BM)
