Allen Hahn has designed productions at many of the world’s leading theatre and opera companies including New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, the Lincoln Center Festival, BAM Next Wave Festival, Boston Lyric Opera, and the Spoleto USA Festival. His international design credits include opera companies and festivals in Australia, South Korea, France, Germany, Norway, Finland, The Netherlands, Spain, and the UK. He has designed world premiere operas at Juilliard in New York and at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, where his 2002 production of Giulio Cesare with Andreas Scholl was recorded for a DVD release on Harmonia Mundi. Allen has collaborated with noted stage directors such as Christopher Alden, Diane Paulus, Ken Cazan, Robin Guarino, Ned Canty, Kevin Newbury, Kristine McIntyre, Sam Helfrich, James Robinson, and Chas Rader-Shieber. Selected U.S. opera credits include new productions of L’incoronazione di Poppea and Death in Venice for Chicago Opera Theater; Mitridate for Santa Fe Opera; Rinaldo for New York City Opera; Émilie for The Lincoln Center Festival; Don Giovanni for The Glimmerglass Opera Festival; Lizzie Borden for Boston Lyric Opera; Transformations for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis; Die Fledermaus for Portland Opera; Il Trittico and Luisa Miller for Spoleto USA; Arianna in Creta, Il Sogno di Scipione for Gotham Chamber Opera, and Bluebeard’s Castle for Opera Omaha. Selected international credits include new productions of Émilie for The Finnish National Opera; Kafka’s Trial and Giulio Cesare for The Royal Danish Opera; La Finta Giardiniera and Fanciulla del West for Opera Zuid, and Der Freischütz at Bilbao. Allen’s designs for theater have been seen in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle and Portland among numerous other US cities. Allen has served as Lighting Design Curator for the US delegation to the 2011 Prague Quadrennial Exhibition of Stage Design, and his work from several productions was selected for the 2007 Quadrennial. He has worked with the cross-media performance company The Builders Association since its inception in 1994. He has also worked with artist Tony Oursler on installations at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and ARoS Kunstmuseum in Denmark. His work in the music world has ranged from designing for David Byrne in Central Park, to working with Alarm Will Sound at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. His dance on camera work as director and designer has been seen in the short films Breath Light Stoneand Mutable Spirals of Ascension, which have been selected for inclusion in festivals in the US and Europe, with Breath Light Stonegarnering awards in multiple categories.
