Ben Bartholomew is currently a sophomore at Bemidji State University (BSU) where he is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Performance, and a Certificate in Arts Management on a full tuition scholarship. He primarily studies saxophone, but is also studies clarinet, flute, and plans to study further woodwind instruments during his time at BSU.
Ben plays in the BSU Wind Ensemble, Blue Ice Jazz Band, and other ensembles at BSU. He currently holds the principal saxophone position in their highest band. He also has been invited to perform as a member of the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, Itasca Symphony Orchestra, Bemidji Area Community Band, the Coleraine City Band, and other ensembles around the northern Minnesota area.
During the summer, Ben likes to travel to camps and festivals to further his studies and gain valuable performance experience. He was most recently accepted to the Brevard Institute for their Jazz Institute for the second year, and their Saxophone Institute for the first time, where he will spend five weeks in 2023 performing and studying with top music students from around the country, learn from industry leaders, participate in live recording sessions, and have the opportunity to participate in multiple performances as part of the Brevard Music Center's summer season. Some of the musicians and mentors Ben will study with include: Branford Marsailis, Michael Dease, Sharel Cassity, Gregory Tardy, Jason Hainsworth, Joseph Lulloff, Henning Schröder, and other incredible musicians.
Upon completion of his undergraduate degree at BSU, Ben plans to continue his studies and receive a graduate degree in Instrumental Performance, Jazz Studies, and/or Multiple Woodwind Performance. He currently studies under the direction Dr. Hilary Leonard.
