Alabama-based bass-baritone and collaborative pianist Benjamin Somervell recently completed his Master of Music in Vocal Performance at The University of Alabama. This summer, he was an Emerging Artist at Seagle Festival, where he performed Joseph de Rocher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and covered Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. He looks forward to joining Shreveport Opera as a Resident Artist for the 2026–2027 season.

Benjamin Somervell, bass-baritone, recently received the Master of Music degree at the University of Alabama where he was a student of Paul Houghtaling. He completed his undergraduate degree in Music Education, with a dual emphasis in voice and bass trombone, at Mississippi State University under Garrett Torbert. The Arkansas native was an Emerging Artist with Opera in the Ozarks in 2025 where he performed Escamillo in Carmen and Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow. He returned to OIO in December 2025 for Evan Mack and Joshua McGuire's Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena. Other recent credits include Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors and The Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance with the Golden Triangle Theatre in Columbus, MS; and Masetto in Don Giovanni, Baron de Pictordu in Cendrillon, Belcore in L'Elisir d'amore, and Peter in Hansel and Gretel with the UA Opera Theatre. In 2024, Mr. Somervell performed the role of General Boom in The Bremen Town Musicians with Mobile Opera and was heard as Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Druid City Opera in 2025. He will cover the title role in Don Pasquale with Druid City Opera this season. He has been a finalist in the Vocal Competition of the National Opera Association, a winner in various categories of Alabama and Mississippi NATS competitions, and a featured soloist with the Mississippi All-Collegiate Honor Choir. Mr. Somervell is looking forward to joining Seagle Festival this summer, where he will be performing Joseph de Rocher in Dead Man Walking, and to joining Shreveport Opera in August as a Resident Artist.
