Dr. Carrie Blosser is a military musician who performs over 100 concerts for military, educational, community, and diplomatic concerts annually. She is a trumpet instrumentalist with Navy Band Northwest in Silverdale, Washington. Before moving to the Seattle area, Dr. Blosser was a member of Navy Band Great Lakes in Chicago, IL, and U.S. Fleet Forces Band in Norfolk, VA. Equally comfortable in various genres, she performs in groups such as the Brass Quintet, Rock Band, and Wind Ensemble. In addition to her duties with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Blosser teaches private trumpet students of all ages and gives master classes, lectures, and performances across the country.
Working with Ashley Killiam, she co-founded Diversify the Stand (DtS) in 2020, a resource promoting diversity through commissioning, crowdfunding, weekly podcast, book club, and publishing. DtS has published five solo collections for brass instruments expanding the repertory for developing musicians.
An avid chamber musician, she co-founded Calypsus Brass, a professional chamber ensemble performing new works recitals, creating high-level professional recordings for composers, and working with chamber musicians at all levels. The five founding members are all women holding doctoral degrees and are performers and educators giving recitals and masterclasses worldwide. Their debut album, Ripple Effect, will release in 2024.
Before military service, she maintained a Colorado-based studio of 65 students while collaborating with multiple schools to deliver weekly clinics. Also, she conducted the Rocky Mountain Concert Band for three years. Before starting her doctoral program, Dr. Blosser was the Director of Bands at Cooper, Junior and Senior High School in Cooper, Texas. Her students’ achievements include selection to Pennsylvania, Texas, and Colorado All-State Bands and advancement to the semi-finals of the National Trumpet Competition as Soloists and Ensemble Performers.
Along with her work as a performer and educator, Dr. Blosser currently serves on the Board of Directors for the International Trumpet Guild (ITG), the National Trumpet Competition (NTC), Calypsus Brass, and Diversify the Stand, and is an active member of the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC). She is the editor of the IWBC bi-annual newsletter and an invited mentor for IWBC’s Mentorship Program. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for NTC, she is the Competition Coordinator in charge of the adjudication panels for the competition. Dr. Blosser is a clinician for the International Trumpet Guild and judges ITG and the National Trumpet Competition. She has published numerous articles in the ITG journal and the IWBC newsletter.
Dr. Blosser received her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Messiah College, Master of Music in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from the University of Northern Colorado, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado-Boulder.
Dr. Blosser is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts for her service as a musician in the U.S. military “for personifying excellence in music and service to country.”
