Charles teaches dance at all levels including post-secondary training in Ballet and Horton Modern at such institutions as Jacob's Pillow, Steps on Broadway, the Ailey School, and Dance Theatre of Harlem.
Charles E. Scheland (Alexandria, VA) received his early training in Germany and Austria. He relocated to Alexandria in 2014 and danced for the Youth Dance Ensemble Company at Joy of Motion Dance Center in Washington, DC until June of 2016. During that time he also was a dancer with the Choreographers' Collaboration Project company, and performed works by Elana Anderson and many others.
Charles attended the Ailey/Fordham BFA in Dance program, and danced in school concerts, outreach touring, and various events including the Ailey Spirit Gala at Lincoln Center (2017 and 2018), performing choreography by Alvin Ailey, Karen Arcenaux, Robert Battle, Adam Barruch, Clifton Brown, Tina Bush, Amy Hall, Tracy Inman, Jessica Lang, Levi Marsman, Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, and Henning Rübsam. He graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors in both of his majors, Dance and Economics. Charles is also an alumnus of the Contemporary Program of the School at Jacob’s Pillow. He has performed further repertory by Joe Celej, Nicole Clark-Springer, Marguerite Donlon, Jae Man Joo, Bill T. Jones, Milton Myers, Paul Taylor, and others.
Professionally, Charles dances for Carolyn Dorfman Dance, and has danced with RIOULT Dance NY and Michael Mao Dance. Charles has also been a guest artist with Princeton Dance Theater, New England Dance Theater, Alison Cook-Beatty Dance, and Vertical Shadows Dance Company.
Charles teaches ballet, Horton technique, and modern dance in and around the New York City area. He is Milton Myers' assistant and demonstrator, domestically and internationally and on faculty at the School at Jacob's Pillow. He is also on the guest faculty at Steps on Broadway, the Ailey School, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. He is on staff at Dance ICONS, the International Consortium for Advancement in Choreography, as the Research Associate and Executive Assistant.
When not dancing, Charles hosts and produces a podcast on The Nerd Party network called Throwback Paperback. He also can be found knitting, in the studio, on the couch, or on the subway.
