Crystal Kachevas joined the faculty at Arkansas State University in the fall of 2020. A native of Arkansas, Kachevas is currently exploring the coloratura soprano literature. Though her favorite genre is romantic opera, she also enjoys performing oratorio, art songs, musical theatre, and other operatic genres in a variety of styles and settings.
On the operatic stage, Kachevas’ recent roles include the Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Lord Birkenhead in the American premiere of
Elena Langer’s Rhondda Rips It Up!, La Fée in Massenet’s Cendrillon, Pietro Baglioni in Catan’s La hija de Rappiccini, Bastienne in Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, and Velena Sue Davenport in Richard Pearson Thomas’ A Wake or a Wedding.
Kachevas holds two degrees in vocal performance: the Bachelor of Music from Arkansas State University and the Master of Music from the University of Arizona at Tucson where she served as a teaching assistant for the vocal area. Recently, Kachevas had the honor of participating in the opening night lecture recital for the Tucson Desert Song Festival which featured performers such as Ian Bostridge, Matthew Polenzani, and Renee Fleming.
As a student, Kachevas participated in summer programs such as OperaMaya and the Druid City Opera Workshop where she was a featured Young Artist. A dedicated performer, she placed in several competitions such as the Amelia Riemann, Marguerite Ough, Music Teachers National Association, and National Association for Teachers of Singing. Kachevas’ post-pandemic endeavors include doctoral studies, teaching and performing.
