Born in Guangzhou, China, Mr. Guangwei Fan is the Second Trombone of the Louisville Orchestra and Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra. He was a fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach and has performed with esteemed ensembles like the Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Nu Deco Ensemble, Macao Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with renowned conductors, including Michael Tilson-Thomas, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Osmo Vänskä, Stèphane Denève, Valery Gergiev, Teddy Abrams, Cristian Măcelaru, Susanna Mälkki, Marin Alsop and JoAnn Falletta. Notably, Mr. Fan has also shared the stage with award-winning artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Anthony Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr., Victoria Canal, Yo-Yo Ma, Yefim Bronfman and Daniil Trifonov. His summers have been marked by performances at prestigious music festivals such as the Spoleto Festival U.S.A., Pacific Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra and National Orchestral Institute.
Mr. Fan’s involvement in the NAXOS recorded album “Harbison, Ruggles & Stucky: Orchestral Works,” conducted by Grammy-winner David Alan Miller, led to a 2018 Grammy nomination for best orchestral performance. In 2022, he premiered the Opera “Omar” by Rhianna Giddens and Michael Abel at the Spoleto Festival USA. This opera went on to win the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
As a soloist, Mr. Fan’s accomplishments include winning the 2014 SliderAsia Asian Tenor Trombone Solo Competition, achieving the 2nd runner-up position in the 2015 SliderAsia International Tenor Trombone Solo Competition and being selected as a finalist in the Gilberto Gagliardi Tenor Trombone Competition at the 2016 International Trombone Festival. In 2020, he gained recognition as the co-winner of the Larry Wiehe Tenor Trombone Competition during the 2020 International Trombone Festival. Mr. Fan was also the winner of the 2022 First Conn-Selmer Trombone Online Competition, further solidifying his status as an accomplished
trombonist.
In China, Mr. Fan studied under the guidance of Mr. Zheng Guo, the former principal trombonist of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. He pursued his bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received instruction from Mr. Nitzan Haroz and Mr. Matthew Vaughn, the principal and co-principal trombonists of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Fan also regularly received lessons from Mr. Blair Bollinger, the bass trombonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Mr. Craig Knox, the principal tubist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he gained acceptance to the Yale School of Music for the master of music program in both 2019 and 2022, allowing him to study with Mr. Scott Hartman.
