Sarah was born in Rochester, NY, and began her musical studies on the piano at age 7. She was introduced to the bass in public school at age 10.
In the fall of 2017, she entered Boston University under the tutelage of Boston Symphony Orchestra principal bassist Edwin Barker. During her time in Boston, she was accepted into the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, which she sat co-principal of for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. Her time with the BPYO included two international tours, including a tour of Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria and the Netherlands in 2018, and a tour of Brazil in 2019.
During the summer of 2018, she attended Domaine Forget and was a scholarship winner to come back the following summer of 2019. While there, she studied with Paul Ellison, David Allen Moore, Francois Rabbath, Nicholas Walker, Etienne Lafrance, Kevin Brown, Scott Dixon.
Additionally, during her time in Boston, she subbed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brookline Symphony Orchestra, among others.
In 2021, she was inducted into the Boston University Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Double Bass Performance. She is now pursuing her Master’s Degree at the University of Southern California under the tutelage of LA Philharmonic bassist David Allen Moore.
In 2022, she was awarded a fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival, as well as fellowship to the Music Academy of the West. She attended the Music Academy during the summer of 2022.
Most recently, she has subbed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Rochester, NY and serves as a principal player for the USC Thornton Symphony.
Aside from music, Sarah has written an article for the International Society of Bassists magazine about her time at Domaine Forget, and was on the staff for Boston University’s independent student newspaper, the Daily Free Press, from 2020-2021. As a staff member, she wrote articles for the Features section, and also appeared as a host and writer for the FreeP’s news podcast, East to West. In 2020, she became part of a group that is creating a podcast to address systemic issues within classical music, for which she won a seed grant from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.
She also has experience working in retail, marketing, and as a receptionist. She worked for Boston University’s Telefund from 2019-2020, Home Depot in the summer of 2020, American Greetings from 2020-2021, REI from the fall of 2020-the summer of 2021, and is a current receptionist in the USC Thornton School of Music’s Dean’s Office.
