Sonia Matheus received her Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of Music where she studied with Jane Marvine. She then pursued her Master of Music at the USC Thornton School of Music under the tutelage of Marion Kuszyk, where she is now pursuing a performance certificate. Matheus is a Sphinx Organization Audition Grant recipient and has attended the Spoleto Music Festival for two summers thanks in part to her performance in the Sphinx Orchestral Excerpt Competition. She commissioned an oboe piece inspired by Latinx-activist poetry and created a database showcasing all Latinx compositions housed at her undergraduate’s music library. As a Latina, Matheus continues to prove how arts-activism is a powerful tool to excel and highlight diversity in the classical music industry.
Matheus is also a budding Musicologist who seeks to involve and apply her past research to her present work and performance. Not only did she receive her BM in Oboe Performance, she also earned two minors in Musicology and History with a focus on East European Jewish communities and its intersection with activism, classical music, and politics. She currently works at the Polish Music Center on the USC campus, where she archives, digitizies, preserves, and performs prominent works of 20th-century Polish works. Matheus believes that archivism and preservation can be the strongest form of musical activsm.
