The ensemble was founded in 1990 in Augsburg by young musicians. The hallmarks of the orchestra are the strong involvement and artistic energy of each individual member, which is expressed above all in playing music without a conductor at the highest level.
In order to be able to realize their extraordinary concepts and concert programmes, the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic has been running the “un·er·hör” series since 2004, the concerts of which are among the greatest moments in Augsburg's cultural life.
The Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic traveled to international festivals throughout Europe, the USA, Brazil and South Korea. The orchestra gave concerts in the Dresden Frauenkirche, the Cologne Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera, among others.
The ensemble has a deep musical bond with the early music specialist Reinhard Goebel. The collaboration with artists such as Christopher Hogwood, Albrecht Mayer, Leonidas Kavakos, Nils Mönkemeyer, Maximilian Hornung, Mstislav Rostropowitsch, as well as the jazz musicians Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea and most recently with the saxophonist Marius Neset testifies to the first-class quality of the Augsburg musicians.
The Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic has received numerous prizes, including the European "Förderpreis für Musik", the "Diapason d'or" and the ECHO Klassik. The orchestra has recorded more than 20 CDs on the most important European labels.
The orchestra's openness to contemporary music is reflected in numerous commissioned works and premieres: composers such as Moritz Eggert, Malin Bång, Henning Sieverts, Richard Dünser and Manuela Kerer wrote for the ensemble. For the 30th anniversary this year, a work by Patrick Schäfer is being created.
Since 2018, the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic has been increasingly involved in promoting children and young people. Family concerts and various interdisciplinary workshops for teachers and school classes are offered under the “young bkp” label.
In September 2020, the soprano Simone Kermes presented her new program "Inferno e Paradiso" with the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic in several concerts.
An anniversary tour will take the ensemble to the Canary Islands in July 2021.
