The Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen was founded on August 1st, 2012 by the merger of two regional theater and city orchestras. Since then, the new orchestra has included 79 musicians from the New Elbland Philharmonic and the former orchestra of the Saxony state theaters. From 2006 to 2017, Christian Voß held the office of General Music Director and Chief Conductor. In 2013, Carola Gotthardt was appointed managing director. In the summer of 2017, Ekkehard Klemm was appointed chief conductor of the orchestra. Today the Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen performs as an orchestra of the cultural area Meissen - Saxon Switzerland - Eastern Ore Mountains in the theatres, town halls, churches and cultural centers around the state capital Dresden. Traditional venues for the orchestra are the Stadthalle “stern” Riesa, the Marienkirche in Pirna, the Theater Meißen and the headquarters of the Landesbühnen Sachsen in Radebeul. Guest performances regularly take the orchestra to the Dresden Music Festival and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The core of the program with more than 100 concerts per year are entitled series with demanding or entertaining symphony. There is also an extensive range of student and chamber music concerts, but also many ambitious school projects such as "Music in the Classroom" or the children's dance project "Breakdance meets Classic". In addition, the orchestra accompanies the church choirs of the region in numerous choral symphonic projects and oratorio performances.
