LP21 is the premier music group of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba & Plena music in the U.S., giving arts learning programs in NY & touring worldwide since 1983.
Founded in 1983 by National Heritage Fellow, Juan Gutiérrez, LOS PLENEROS DE LA 21 (LP21) is an East Harlem traditional performing arts nonprofit organization created to foster awareness & appreciation of Puerto Rican traditional expressions–particularly those of African descent: Bomba & Plena–as indispensable to a healthy community life. LP21 accomplishes its objectives through a unique model which combines both community programming and widespread international touring efforts, that has allowed them to remain at the forefront of creating accessible cultural programming, and pioneer the performance practice and education on Puerto Rican traditional arts and Bomba and Plena and inspiring over three generations of cultural organizations and traditional arts practitioners.
