Musiqa is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the performance of contemporary classical music. Founded in 2002 and led by four composers, the mission of Musiqa is to enrich and inspire our community through programs that integrate contemporary music with other modern art forms.
Musiqa celebrates modern creative arts through interdisciplinary concerts that highlight modern music and its connections to literature, film, dance, art and more.
With its innovative collaborations, artistic and educational programming, Musiqa strives to make modern repertoire accessible and vital to audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds.
Each season, Musiqa provides at least seven public performances – four as part of our Music+ Concert Series performed at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Zilkha Hall and the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston and three as part of our free Loft Concert Series at the Contemporary Art Museum Houston.
Musiqa’s nationally acclaimed Education Program is one of the largest of its kind in the nation for an ensemble our size. Every year we present two productions—“Around the World with Musiqa” and “Musiqa ReMix”—in partnership with the Hobby Center for Performing Arts’ Discovery Series. We reach over 6,000 school children in grades 2 through 8, from 60 different schools in eight school systems, in Greater Houston. Since its founding, Musiqa has served over 50,000 students from over 230 schools in the region.
Musiqa is thrilled to once again join forces with the Houston Ballet HBII program to support the creation of a new work by an emerging choreographer. Corps de Ballet member Madison Russo is collaborating Musiqa’s artist board to create this world premiere performance. The program also includes new works by Musiqa’s Artistic Board — Karim Al-Zand, Anthony Brandt, and Pierre Jalbert. Season Info
Musiqa has a rich history of exploring the visual arts, from collaborations with painters like Geraldina Interiano Wise to our ongoing partnership with the CAMH. This spring we’ll continue that tradition with a concert featuring the premieres of new works by Emerging Composer Fellowship winners Ryne Siesky, Tianyi Wang and Sam Wu, and a presentation of new work by Houston-based visual artist Carrie Marie Schneider.
Musiqa, a new music collective in Houston, premieres There Is a City for voice, clarinet, percussion, and electronics as part of their Fotofest concert.
