About

Rich in tradition, the internationally renowned Sibelius Academy has trained thousands of artists and music experts since 1882. Our fundamental task is to preserve and update music culture. An uncompromising enthusiasm for getting things done and a love for music are at the core of our activities. Each year we have been ranked among the world’s best institutions of higher education in the performing arts (QS World University Rankings by Subject). Cornerstones of our operations are teaching, research, and artistic activities. We are one of Europe’s largest music academies and an international community of about 1,400 students and 500 teachers. The focus of the studies is for students to grow into professional artists at one with their own identity. We strengthen students’ artistic skills and knowledge and prepare them for their careers. On their individual study paths, students can both focus on a specialised area and develop versatile artistic professionalism. Research and musical practices interact closely at the Sibelius Academy. The targets of our research include producing, performing, receiving, teaching, and learning music, the history of musical practices, musical structures, musical interaction, the philosophy and aesthetics of music, and the interaction of music, the public, and society. Public concerts are an essential part of how our students grow to become artists. Showcases of our artistic activities include about 600 concerts and other events each year, which are held in the core of Helsinki’s cultural life, the Helsinki Music Centre.
