The Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was founded in 1943. Music Director Peter Stafford Wilson conducts 72 of the area's finest professional musicians in a six concert subscription series, a concert for the Springfield Arts Council Summer Arts Festival, an educational Young People's Concert and special outreach concerts for under-served parts of the community. An active education program includes three Youth Orchestras, a Children's Chorus, youth chamber ensembles, and a Students at the Symphony program that brings inner-city children to subscription concerts.
The SSO’s attractive programming, professional quality and superb guest artists have gained the enthusiasm of audiences throughout each season. Performances are held in the world-class Clark State Performing Arts Center, which features easy access and free parking.
