Michigan high schools are invited to participate in the annual Sutton Foster Awards, the Michigan Chapter of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA). These regional and national programs celebrate outstanding achievement in musical theatre performance and production by high school students and educators. Schools may submit their fall and/or spring qualifying (as determined by NHSMTA) musical theatre productions for adjudication. At the end of the school year, adjudicators’ scores determine awards in technical categories and nominate a lead actor and a lead actress from each school to participate in the Sutton Foster Awards on stage at Wharton Center. Winners (a Best Actor and a Best Actress) of that competition go to New York to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (“the Jimmy Awards”).
