The Brazilian mezzo-soprano Camila Montefusco is quickly distinguishing herself as a passionate and exciting artist. Hailed for her “lush steady tone” (Stage Door), last season Camila made her Koerner Hall debut as Goffredo in Handel’s Rinaldo. Past roles include Nada in Ana Sokolovic’s Svadba, La Zia Principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Indiana Elliot in Thompson’s The Mother of Us All and Katisha in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado.

Past season, Camila was a young artist with the Britten Pears Young Artist Program, the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, and Toronto Summer Music Festival. During these residencies, Camila worked extensively on operatic and art song repertoire with renowned industry professionals such as Wolfram Rieger, John Fisher and Dolora Zajick.

Camila is excited to tour with Prairie Debut in the 2023-2024 season, bringing to the Prairies repertoire she is truly passionate about. As co-founder of Obsidiana Duo, Camila believes in the importance of Ibero-American musical culture and history. The Duo was born from her desire to give voice to BIPOC and historically excluded composers through folk music from Latin America. Along with pianist Yolanda Tapia, Camila is proud to be part of the work towards a more equitable and diverse industry.

Since starting her vocal studies in Canada, Camila has been awarded several prizes and scholarships, including First prize at the Maritsa Brookes Concerto Competition, Encouragement Prize from the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions, Second Prize at the Galina Pisarenko Youth Competition (Russia), and the Revelation Prize at the Linus Lerner International Vocal Competition (Brazil). Originally from Sao Paulo, Camila holds a master’s degree in Voice Performance from Western University, and a bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from the University of Sao Paulo.
