Biography

Christina Orjis

Christina is a New Zealand Soprano who has been performing since the age of 7, having been involved with Auckland Children’s Musical Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre and the NZ Opera Children’s Chorus, as well as many celebrated productions at Kristin School, known for their acclaimed performing arts department. Christina studied at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, where she received a Victoria University Excellence Scholarship and the NZSM Director’s Post-Graduate Scholarship. In her final year she performed the lead role of “Gulnara” in the Australasian Premiere of Verdi’s ‘Il Corsaro’ with the NZSM Orchestra at the Wellington Opera House, was a soloist in the Wellington Town Hall with the NZSM Orchestra for their ‘Wagner and Verdi Celebration’ concert (recorded for Radio NZ Concert), and sang with NZ star tenor Simon O’Neill at Te Papa Museum for a NZSM Fundraising concert. Christina has performed the title role in ‘Suor Angelica’ (Puccini), ‘Mother’ in Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) and ‘La Ciesca’ in ‘Gianni Schicchi’ (Puccini) for Auckland based company Opera Factory, has appeared live on television as an Anthem Singer for Netball New Zealand, singing the Malawi National Anthem in 2018, and was a member of the New Zealand Opera Chorus from 2013 - 2018. Christina has been a finalist in many local competitions and in 2017 she got through to the Second Round in the Australian Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Foundation Bel Canto Award and she was the Winner of the Ronald Dellow Memorial Vocal Recital Competition. She has also been lucky enough to participate in numerous Masterclasses, including with: Dame Kiri te Kanawa; Dame Malvina Major; Prof. Paul Farrington; Dennis O’Neill; renowned New York based teacher, David Jones; and Simon O’Neill. Christina completed her first year of her MMus at the RNCM with the generous support of the James and Mary Glass Scholarship in 2020. Due to suffering from Long Covid, Christina has had to defer beginning the 2nd year of her MMus until September 2022. She is still currently taught by Mary Plazas (UK).
