Long:
Tony is a versatile percussionist and avid performer of contemporary solo and chamber music. His passion for contemporary music began during his undergraduate degree where he was fortunate enough to study with professors who encouraged him to explore his interests in contemporary music. Throughout his undergraduate degree he was fortunate to attend festivals and masterclasses with influential contemporary music groups such as So Percussion, Sandbox Percussion, JACK Quartet, and the Cortona Collective. He completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University studying with Ji Hye Jung and Lee Vinson and recently finished his M.M. studying with Svet Stoyanov, Matthew Strauss, and Joseph Petrasek at the University of Miami. While at Vanderbilt Tony was an advocate for contemporary music and was disappointed that the music school did not have a new music ensemble and that students largely had to explore those interests on their own. He and five others cofounded the Eschaton New Music Ensemble in 2017. The ensemble was entirely student-led and over the course of his two years as vice president the group organized and performed more than 5 concerts, held a roster of more than 50 student performers, and commissioned and premiered a handful of new works. He and six other members of the Eschaton ensemble completed an ensemble-residency at the 2018 Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona Italy. In 2019 Tony began his master’s degree studying with Svet Stoyanov and Matthew Strauss at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. He recently performed Steve Reich’s monumental work “Sextet” with the Frost Percussion Group in February of 2020. Tony is currently a doctoral candidate at Arizona State University studying with Michael Compitello and Matthew Prendergast.
