A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Torrance Buntyn Jr. began his percussion studies at ten years old. Throughout his middle and high school years of percussion matriculation, he has won many awards through the WTSBOA All-West Tennessee Honor Bands and the TMEA All-State Tennessee Honor Bands. In 2018, he received outstanding recognition for performing in the Tennessee Bandmasters Association’s Honor Recital in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition, he performed with the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he was the principal timpanist. Torrance is studying to get a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance at Southern Methodist University – Meadows School of the Arts, studying with George Nickson (principal percussionist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and Brian Jones (Principal Timpanist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra). In Dallas, Torrance serves as an active freelance percussionist and percussion teacher for students in the area.
Torrance is an alumnus of an HBCU (Historically Black College/University), Tennessee State University of Nashville, TN. He studied under Dr. Derrick Greene and Dr. Sean Daniels and received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. While there, he performed in the 2x grammy winning Aristocrat of Bands and toured with the TSU Wind Ensemble as principal percussionist.
Torrance has participated in numerous seminars and festivals such as the Ted Atkatz Percussion Seminar, New York University’s Broadway Percussion Seminar, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, now known as Sewanee Music Center, and the National Orchestra Institute and Festival. He has done studio recordings with the RISE Diversity Orchestra at the Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. He is a protégé of the Alliance of Black Orchestral Percussionists (ABOP), where his mentors are Douglas Cardwell (Former Principal Timpanist of New Mexico Philharmonic) and Raynor Carroll (Former Principal Percussionist of Los Angeles Philharmonic and CEO of ABOP). Torrance is part of the first Emerging Artists cohort for the Network of Diversity in Concert Percussion.
In addition, Torrance has held administrative positions as an Operations Intern for the Nashville Symphony and a Liaison for the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of several organizations, such as Alpha Kappa Lambda Music Honors Society, Alpha Kappa Mu Honors Society, and Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Inc. In addition, he is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Inc., which includes serving as the principal percussionist of the Sinfonia Winds during the 57th National Sinfonia Convention in St. Louis, MO. Lastly, Torrance has performed as a section percussionist with the Nashville African American Wind Symphony, including in their debut Juneteenth performance of 2022.
