Flutist Whitney Applewhite strives to offer meaningful instruction and performances that can inspire others and contribute to the overall support and success of the arts. As second-year masters student and the graduate teaching assistant for the University of Tennessee Flute Studio, Whitney has found her passion in music through collaboration and teaching.
During her undergraduate studies, Whitney served as the principal flute of the University Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, where she played as a featured soloist following the Orchestral Concerto Competition in 2019. She has played in various masterclasses, most notable being the Louisiana Flute Society's masterclass competition with Sharon Sparrow, assistant principal flute of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Whitney currently serves as principal flute in the Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble at the University of Tennessee. In addition to the larger ensembles on campus, Whitney has played with the UT Opera Orchestra, the Graduate Woodwind Trio, and the UT Flute Choir. While studying at the newly named UT College of Music, Whitney performed Spanish Composer Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto Pastoral with the Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the Orchestral Concerto Competition in 2023. In the Spring of 2023, she was named the recipient of the Gerald W. Barnes Woodwind Award.
As an avid supporter of the community and arts advocate, Whitney served as the first ambassador for the College of the Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she proposed ideas for projects to better support the School of Music and Performing Arts. At the end of her undergraduate studies, she was a recipient of an award for philanthropy and community service, with a total of over 200 hours dedicated to local organizations.
Throughout her career, Whitney has been invited to play with various ensembles, including the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, the Amadeus Chamber Ensemble, the Iberia Performing Arts League, and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. As a recipient of the Beth Hansen Guilbeaux Memorial Flute Scholarship from 2018-2022, she earned a B.M. in Flute Performance at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and is currently pursuing a M.M. in Flute Performance from the University of Tennessee. Her prior teachers inclue Amy Williams and Dr. Andrea Kapell Loewy.
Whitney is currently a student of Dr. Maria Fernanda Castillo.
