Mercury was started by four friends in the year 2000 as an intimate chamber ensemble with the goal to enrich and entertain Houston audiences with an exciting repertoire of music performed on period instruments.
What began as a grassroots effort over lunch at a local restaurant has blossomed into a lively chamber orchestra beloved by the community. In 2013, Mercury rebranded and expanded its repertoire to include works outside of the Baroque period. In this evolution, the goal remains the same—bringing music to life and to people across Houston and beyond.
Mercury continues to receive critical and audience acclaim for innovative and welcoming performances, while also impacting the lives of young Houstonians through award-winning music education programs.
Mission: To serve the community by celebrating the power of music—Baroque and beyond—through teaching, sharing and performing with passion, intimacy and excellence.
Mozart: Cats and Mice is a playful reimagining of Mozart’s Bastien & Bastienne, originally composed when he was just twelve years old. In this enchanting adaptation for young audiences, the pastoral lovers are recast as charming mice. When Bastienne suspects Bastien of being swayed by the allure of a glamorous cat-lady, she follows the advice of a wizardly owl and agrees to use a magical disguise to test his loyalty. Mozart’s music soars through this tale of love, loyalty, and a touch of woodland wizardry.
Featuring a new English libretto and vibrant staging, the production blends humor, imagination, and a touch of magic to create a fairy-tale opera experience specially designed for 5th grade audiences. With whimsical costumes, special effects, and a timeless message, Mozart: Cats and Mice delights both seasoned opera lovers and first-time audiences alike.
