Biography

Kate Johnson

Soprano Kate Johnson debuted this March at Opera Roanoke as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. An avid champion of new opera, she performed in the world premiere of Two Corners, by composer B.E. Boykin and librettist Jarrod Lee, at Finger Lakes Opera this June, following her participation in December in a workshop of the piece with Opera Fusion: New Works at Cincinnati Opera. In 2023, she created the title role in the world premiere of Anne Frank by composer Shulamit Ran and librettist Charles Kondek at Indiana University Jacobs Opera Theater, and in November she created the dual leading role of Shprintse/Rose in a workshop of Tevye’s Daughters, a new opera by composer Alex Weiser and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, for American Lyric Theater in New York. Last fall, she created the role of Elaine in a workshop of Zheng by composer Shinji Eshima and librettist Tony Asaro, at Opera San José. Equally adept in the standard operatic repertory, she portrayed Sandrina in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera in October at Indiana University Opera Theater, where she has also sung Atalanta in Handel’s Xerxes and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. Prior to spending summer 2023 as a Studio Artist with Central City Opera, she was a 2021 Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera. As recipient of a 2021-22 Fulbright Austria grant, she was based in Vienna, where her work focused on the Lieder of Walter Bricht. A student of Heidi Grant Murphy, she earned a Performer Diploma and a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, she has twice received the Opera Omaha Guild Award and a 2020 Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She is a 2024-2025 Resident Artist with Tri-Cities Opera, where she will portray Pamina in The Magic Flute and Gilda in Rigoletto.
