Description
Duo Ferula’s mission is to expand the repertoire for the clarinet and alto saxophone idiom, emphasizing the versatility of the combined woodwind voices. This performance embodies that through two consortium world premieres. FER//ULA by Nadine Silverman “dives into the etymology of each half of the commissioning duo’s name,” in the composer’s words. Silverman’s title of the piece brings forward the concept of identity, highlighting the separate in relation to the whole. Matthew Howell crafts a sense of disorder through chromatic shifts and metric changes in his piece (un?)Fairly Ambiguous. Howell states that “the way that the material is constantly trying to mislead the listener gives a sense of subverted expectations.”

Description
Project Synthesis explores soundscapes through an array of timbres (saxophone, clarinet, violin, piano) and musical styles such as jazz, Indigenous, popular, and classical music. The program features works written, commissioned, and arranged by Meara O'Reilly, Jacob de Bandolim, Gabriela Ortiz, Shawn Okpebholo, David Biedenbender, and George Enescu. A new work, Etherea, was composed by Kyle W. Brown.

Biography
Kelli Ray is a clarinetist and educator from Birmingham, Alabama. As an ardent performer of chamber music, Ray co- founded Duo Ferula – a clarinet and saxophone ensemble that promotes new repertoire for that instrumentation. Duo Ferula made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2022, in collaboration on 'Project Synthesis.' Upon winning the Concerto Competition at the University of Alabama, she performed the Copland Clarinet Concerto with the Huxford Symphony Orchestra. Ray was also a recipient of the Presser Foundation Scholarship and performed professionally with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra. She has played principal clarinet for ensembles including the Huxford Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble at UA, and the University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Orchestra at FSU. She runs a studio in addition to teaching masterclasses at surrounding schools. Her teachers include Dr. Osiris Molina, Dr. Deborah Bish, and Dr. Jonathan Holden. She received her master’s degree in Woodwind Performance at Florida State University and bachelor’s degree in Woodwind Performance at the University of Alabama.
