Deeply rooted in a wide range of musical genres, Solomon Temitope Abang has surfaced as a sought-after trumpeter, educator, composer, vocalist and music producer. Coming from one of the largest and most populous cities in Africa, Lagos, Nigeria, a city with a rich history of culture and electrifying musical tradition, the value of art has been deeply engraved in Solomon with the trumpet serving as his medium of communication and an extension of his body.
Following the tragic loss of his father at the age of 16, his entire world was clouded with doubts and uncertainty about his future. During this period, Solomon's education was put on temporary hold due to emotional and financial difficulties at the time. In the midst of this, the encouraging words of his beloved father to "...always aspire for success regardless of its cost" became his watchword and ultimately, the arts, through music miraculously found him. He soon found tranquility and purpose again, and has ever since passionately pursued music.
Unlike most of his colleagues growing up, Solomon spent most of his teenage years studying music theory texts, searching for whatever resources were available on the internet, while aspiring to become a force to reckon with in the music world, just like his role model, Wynton Marsalis, who he eventually met in 2019. In the span of a decade, Solomon's relentless passion for musical excellence has propelled him beyond the shores of his home country gaining quality education in the arts in some of the most reputable institutions in the US and across the globe.
In 2014, he was offered a full scholarship by the MTNF Foundation for an Artist Diploma at the MUSON School of Music, in Lagos, Nigeria. Upon the successful completion of his studies at the MUSON School of Music, he continued his studies in affiliation with the Royal Schools of Music, London where he was awarded a Diploma in Trumpet Performance in 2018. Shortly after that, he moved on to study jazz and classical trumpet at the University of Louisiana, Monroe where he was awarded the prestigious international David Baker Scholarship Award, presented by the Jazz Education Network in New Orleans. Solomon is currently pursuing a graduate degree at the prestigious University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music, and is only a few months away from getting on a doctoral degree track in trumpet performance.
Some of his recent teachers include: Dr. Eric Siereveld, Dr. Michael Mergen, Mr. Phil Collins, Prof. Ashley Hall, and Mr. Matthew Anklan. As an artist, Solomon's goal is to constantly unify his music with all forms of art through collaborative creativity and community integration. Being an international artist in the United States, the need to be impactful and successful in my field means a great deal to him, because his ultimate goal is to give back to as many communities as possible that cannot afford traditional Western music education. Solomon serves in several NGOs that gives weekly online lessons to aspiring musicians across Nigeria and Africa at large, and he aspires to leave a footprint on the global music scene.
In his leisure time, Solomon enjoys being outdoors exploring the glamorous world of photography and cinematography, writing, cooking, and playing competitive board games.
Solomon can be heard performing in several professional projects including solo performances, chamber music, wind symphonies, orchestras, brass quintets and self-produced albums. He recently recorded two professional albums with the Lagniappe Brass Quintet released under MRI and Albany Records.
