Phoebe Kuan served as the Acting Associate/Eb/Second clarinet of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in its 2022-2023 season. Phoebe is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where she received a Bachelor of Music with Distinction and a Certificate of Achievement in Chamber Music studying under Michael Wayne and Jon Manasse. A strong believer in community outreach and an avid chamber musician, Phoebe was involved with the Rochester community during her time as Eastman, often performing outreach concerts and mini-lecture series with her woodwind quintet, The Meraki Winds, at various venues, including the Rochester Public Library, George Eastman Museum, and local elementary and middle schools. In 2020, Phoebe completed her residency in Lake Placid as a fellow of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta In-School Educational Program. During this time, she led many band rehearsals, woodwind sectionals, and gave several masterclasses with Lake Placid’s public music programs. Phoebe has previously appeared with the Eastman Philharmonia, Eastman Wind Ensemble, Royal Conservatory Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. She is honored to have worked with renowned conductors such as Andris Nelson, JoAnn Falletta, Leonard Slakin, and Earl Lee. Phoebe is featured as a recording artist in the world premieres of Jeff Tyzik’s Octet (Rochester,NY 2021) and Sid Richardson’s Rock Garden (Lenox, MA 2022). She has been awarded First Prize in the clarinet division of the Southwestern Youth Music Festival in 2015 and 2016. She was also the Grand Prize winner with her high school orchestra in the National Taiwan Orchestra Competition. In the summers, Phoebe has participated as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Hidden Valley Music Festival of the Winds, Marrowstone Music Festival, and Miami Music Festival. A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Phoebe enjoys spending time with her family and friends when she is home. She loves spending time outdoors, and her favorite activities include jogging and rock climbing. Phoebe currently resides in Toronto with her cat, Louie, as a recipient of the Ihnatowynz Emerging Scholarship.
